Ceremonial dress worn by the empress was made of deep blue silk with very wide sleeves almost sweeping the ground, a plain neck fastening over to the right side, and a long skirt. The robe was decorated with pairs of pheasants, while bands of dragons edged the neck, cuffs and hem. A hoped belt with jeweled plaques was placed was placed around the waist from which a bi xi hung in color and fabric matching the robe. Rank was denoted by an embroidered neckband decorated with gold and jade which covered the chest. This was called a xia pei, and was the forerunner to the ceremonial vest worn by Han Chinese women in the Qing dynasty. Worn as early as the fifth century AD, it grew in popularity in the Sui and Tang dynasties, and was worn by members of the Ming imperial family as well as wives of officials on ceremonial occasions, and with semi-formal dress later in the dynasty.
